Youth in Permaculture: Relaunching an International Network for Young Changemakers
We are excited to relaunch the Youth in Permaculture Project, an initiative designed to support young people under 30 in putting permaculture ethics into meaningful practice. This isn’t about one-off events or short-term experiences; our goal is to create a long-term, year-long journey of learning, experimentation, and reflection, supported by a network of peers and mentors around the world.
A Collaborative Vision
The first step in building this network is a co-creative meeting where we will bring together educators, facilitators, and youth leaders to develop a shared vision. Together, we will define the values, principles, and practical approaches that will guide our work. While we have some initial ideas—like building a pedal-powered sound system or hosting a “grow your own pizza” party—this project will flourish when everyone contributes their creativity.
Ethical Foundations
Our involvement is rooted in clear ethical commitments. Projects must respect all life: animals, if present, must be free to come and go of their own accord, without restraint or exploitation. This ensures that the learning environment reflects the permaculture ethics of care for the earth and all its inhabitants.
Project Examples
Pedal-Powered Sound System
Over the course of a year, young participants learn, experiment, and develop their skills. They identify the knowledge they want to share with others. The culmination is a hands-on building project: a pedal-powered sound system, followed by a festival run entirely by the youth themselves, including educational sessions and celebrations.
Grow Your Own Pizza Party
Another approach is a year-long journey where young people cultivate, harvest, and prepare all ingredients for a pizza party. This project empowers participants to connect deeply with the process of growing food, learning skills, and sharing their creations with the community.
These are only starting points—other project ideas are welcome. The key is a process that encourages creativity, responsibility, and ongoing engagement, rather than short-term outcomes.
Who Can Join
We are reaching out to groups already working with young people, as well as organisations or individuals who wish to contribute in new ways. If you’re already teaching permaculture, we can provide additional training and support. If you’re not yet working with youth, your ideas and expertise can still help shape this global network.
Together, we aim to nurture the next generation of permaculture practitioners—young people who can confidently apply permaculture ethics in their lives and communities, and who will carry this learning forward internationally.
Let’s relaunch this movement—together.
